SHIPPING GUIDES

Shipping explained. Without the jargon.

Practical information for getting your shipment from A to B.

START HERE

Three things worth knowing before anything moves.

AIR OR SEA?

Choose the right transport.

Air freight is generally suited to faster, smaller or more urgent shipments. Sea freight is often better for larger, heavier or less time-sensitive cargo.

SIZE MATTERS

Measure before you quote.

Freight charges are not always based on physical weight alone. Dimensions are particularly important for air freight and consolidated sea freight.

TELL US EVERYTHING

The contents matter.

Batteries, aerosols, chemicals, food and other everyday products can have special transport requirements. Always describe the goods accurately.

SHIPPING LIBRARY

Find the guide you need.

Air freight is one of the quickest ways to move goods internationally, but the process begins well before the aircraft departs.

Quotation

Redcoat will normally need the number of pieces, weight, dimensions, description of the goods, origin and destination.

Collection or delivery

Cargo can be collected where arranged or delivered to an agreed Redcoat location.

Acceptance

The shipment is checked against the booking, including weights, dimensions and any restrictions applying to the goods.

Airline movement

Once export procedures are complete, cargo is handed to the airline for international transport.

Destination

On arrival, the shipment may require customs clearance, local handling and collection or delivery.

Aircraft capacity is limited by both weight and physical space, which is why air freight uses volumetric weight.

LENGTH × WIDTH × HEIGHT ÷ 6000 Dimensions in centimetres

The result is compared with the shipment's actual gross weight. The higher figure normally becomes the chargeable weight.

EXAMPLE

A box measuring 60 × 50 × 40 cm has a volumetric weight of 20 kg. If the box physically weighs 12 kg, the air freight chargeable weight would normally be 20 kg.

Sea freight is particularly useful for larger or heavier shipments where speed is less important.

GROUPAGE

Share the container.

Smaller shipments can be consolidated with cargo from other customers rather than requiring a complete container.

FULL CONTAINER

Use the whole container.

Larger shipments may justify a dedicated 20ft or 40ft container.

Sea freight transit times are longer than air freight and schedules can be affected by vessel routing, port operations and transhipment.

CBM stands for cubic metre and measures how much physical space your shipment occupies.

LENGTH × WIDTH × HEIGHT = CBM Measurements in metres
EXAMPLE

A package measuring 1.2m × 0.8m × 0.6m occupies 0.576 cubic metres.

If you have multiple packages, calculate the volume of each piece and add the results together.

AIR

Best when speed matters.

Generally faster and well suited to urgent, valuable or relatively compact cargo.

SEA

Best when space matters.

Often more practical for larger, bulky or heavier cargo where longer transit times are acceptable.

Cost is not the only consideration. The nature of the goods, dimensions, required delivery date and destination all affect the best option.

STANDARD

You arrange destination clearance.

Redcoat handles the agreed export arrangements. The consignee then clears and collects the goods at destination and pays applicable destination charges.

CLEARED

Redcoat handles more of the process.

Redcoat coordinates destination clearance and agreed local charges, with the cargo then made available through the applicable Redcoat collection arrangements.

The right service depends on whether the consignee is comfortable arranging their own customs clearance at destination.

Many suitable food products can travel from the UK to The Gambia, but the contents and packaging need to be considered before acceptance.

Declare the contents

Tell Redcoat exactly what food products are being shipped.

Pack securely

Packaging must withstand normal freight handling throughout the journey.

Frozen food

Frozen food is not accepted on Redcoat's standard UK-to-Banjul air freight service.

Check before shipping

If you are unsure about a particular product, confirm acceptance before bringing it to Redcoat.

Lithium batteries are regulated for transport because damaged or defective cells can present a fire risk.

Always declare them

Tell Redcoat if the shipment contains lithium batteries or battery-powered equipment.

Installed or separate?

Requirements can differ depending on whether the battery is installed in equipment, packed alongside it or shipped separately.

Power banks

Power banks are treated as batteries rather than equipment containing a battery.

Damaged batteries

Never assume a damaged, swollen or defective battery can be accepted for normal air transport.

Products do not need to look industrial to be regulated for transport. Everyday examples can include:

Perfume Aerosols Body sprays Power banks Batteries Paint Certain cleaners Flammable liquids

If you are unsure, provide Redcoat with the manufacturer's product information or Safety Data Sheet before the shipment is booked.

Customs declarations tell the authorities what goods are crossing the border, their value, origin, destination and the reason for the movement.

Goods description

Use a clear and meaningful description. Avoid vague terms such as "parts" or "samples" where a more specific description is available.

Commodity code

The code classifies the goods and can affect duty, tax and regulatory requirements.

Value

Customs normally requires an appropriate value even where goods are not being sold.

Reason for export

A sale, repair, temporary movement or return can require different customs treatment.

If goods are leaving the UK temporarily or travelling overseas for repair, tell Redcoat before the export declaration is prepared.

The customs procedure used when the goods leave can affect how they are treated when they return. Incorrectly exporting the goods as a normal permanent export can create unnecessary duty, tax or administrative problems later.

Important

Keep serial numbers, invoices, repair paperwork and evidence identifying the goods wherever possible.

Televisions can be shipped, but screens are particularly vulnerable to impact and pressure during normal freight handling.

Original packaging

The manufacturer's original box and internal protection are preferable where available.

Protect the screen

Avoid allowing hard objects or concentrated pressure to contact the display surface.

Disclaimer

Redcoat requires TVs to travel subject to its applicable damage disclaimer.

Additional boarding

An additional paid protective boarding service may be available.

Package everything

Cargo should normally be fully packed and ready for transport before collection.

Label the pieces

Make sure packages can be identified against the booking.

Individual weight

Standard third-party collections generally require individual pieces to remain within the applicable handling weight limits.

Access

Ensure somebody is available and the driver can reach the collection point safely.

If you have very heavy, oversized or awkward cargo, tell Redcoat in advance so the correct vehicle and handling arrangements can be considered.

Pharmaceutical movements can require more preparation than general cargo because regulatory, documentation and consignee requirements need to be understood before the goods move.

Product

Give Redcoat an accurate description of the medicine or healthcare product.

Parties

Confirm the shipper, consignee and organisations involved in the transaction.

Documentation

Commercial and regulatory paperwork should be reviewed before export.

Destination

Import requirements can differ by country and product.

Repatriation requires careful coordination between several parties and should be discussed directly with the Redcoat team.

Origin

Where the journey will begin.

Destination

The intended country and final city.

Arranging party

Contact details for the family, funeral director or organisation involved.

Documentation

Tell us which documents have already been obtained.

SHIPPING FAQS

Shipping questions. Made clearer.

From collections and drop-offs to air freight, sea freight, customs and shipping to The Gambia, we have answered some of the questions our customers ask us most.

FIND AN ANSWER

What do you need help with?

GETTING STARTED

Before you ship.

To prepare a quotation we normally need your name, the number of pieces, the weight and dimensions of the shipment, whether collection is required, the nature of the goods, destination and, where relevant, whether you require Standard or Cleared service.

Send us as much information as you have. Accurate weights and dimensions are important for final pricing, but we can discuss the shipment with you before everything is confirmed.

Yes. Photographs can be useful for unusual, bulky or specialist shipments and can help us understand exactly what needs to be moved.

No. International freight can be affected by airline or vessel schedules, weather, customs, operational disruption and other factors outside the forwarder's control, so delivery dates cannot be guaranteed.

COLLECTIONS & DROP-OFFS

Getting your goods to us.

Yes. UK collections can be arranged by speaking to our team or requesting collection as part of your quotation.

Redcoat's standard collections are normally arranged as all-day collections rather than guaranteed timed slots.

For Redcoat driver collections, the driver will normally call when they are on their way. Third-party drivers may not be required to call, so access to the collection address should be available throughout the collection period.

Individual pieces collected by standard drivers should normally be no more than 30kg. Contact Redcoat in advance if you have heavier items so that suitable collection arrangements can be discussed.

Redcoat's current third-party collection restrictions include suitcases, barrels and TVs. Please contact us if you need one of these items collected so we can discuss alternatives.

Yes. Suitable shipments can be delivered to one of our available locations. Contact the team before travelling so we can confirm the correct location and opening arrangements.

AIR FREIGHT

Shipping by air.

Air freight is generally charged using the chargeable weight. This is based on whichever is greater: the actual physical weight or the calculated volumetric weight.

Volumetric weight is a calculated weight based on the amount of aircraft space the shipment occupies. A large lightweight box can therefore have a higher chargeable weight than its actual physical weight.

Redcoat operates regular UK-to-Banjul air freight services. Check the latest departure information with our team or the shipping dates shown on the website.

No. Some goods may be prohibited, restricted or classified as dangerous goods and need specialist packing or an alternative transport method. Always tell us exactly what you are shipping.

SEA FREIGHT

Shipping by sea.

Redcoat currently operates UK-to-Gambia sea freight sailings approximately every four to five weeks.

No. Smaller shipments may be consolidated with other cargo where a suitable groupage service is available.

Yes. Redcoat offers full-container options including 20ft and 40ft containers.

CBM means cubic metre. It measures the physical volume occupied by the cargo and is commonly used when calculating sea freight charges.

SHIPPING TO THE GAMBIA

One of our most established routes.

Yes. Redcoat has its own operational presence in The Gambia, allowing us to support customers at both origin and destination.

With the Standard service, Redcoat handles the export documentation. At destination, the consignee is responsible for collecting and clearing the shipment and paying the applicable local charges.

Redcoat's Cleared service is designed to simplify the destination process. Redcoat handles the clearance and applicable local handling charges, duties and taxes included within the agreed service, with collection arranged from the Redcoat location in Kairaba.

Door delivery can be arranged within a limited delivery radius. Contact Redcoat with the final delivery address for a separate delivery quotation.

WHAT CAN I SHIP?

Everyday items. Different rules.

Yes. TVs can be shipped, but Redcoat requires a disclaimer because televisions are transported at the sender's risk. A paid boarding service may also be available to provide additional screen protection, although this does not guarantee against damage.

Redcoat accepts many suitable food products on the UK-to-Banjul air freight service. Frozen food is not accepted on this service. Some chilled goods may require additional specialist packaging.

Restrictions apply. Redcoat's current guidance does not allow raw meat, while suitable fruit, vegetables and dry food should be in their original packaging. Additional UK import restrictions may also apply depending on the goods.

These items can often be shipped, but they commonly contain lithium batteries and must therefore be declared to Redcoat before transport.

Yes. Any lithium battery or item containing lithium batteries should be declared before the shipment is accepted so the appropriate transport requirements can be checked.

Yes. Redcoat handles a wide range of larger goods including furniture, building materials, electrical items and general cargo, subject to the individual shipment and route.

CUSTOMS & CLEARANCE

Getting through customs.

Redcoat can coordinate the relevant export transport and customs documentation as part of the agreed freight service.

That depends on which service you choose. Standard service requires the consignee to manage destination clearance and local charges. Redcoat's Cleared service is designed to handle that process on your behalf.

Yes. Temporary imports, temporary exports, repair movements and other specialist customs procedures can be discussed with our team before the shipment moves.

DANGEROUS GOODS

Some ordinary items need specialist handling.

Examples can include perfumes, body sprays, aerosols, some nail varnishes, power banks, batteries, chemical cleaning products and other flammable, pressurised or corrosive goods.

Not always. Dangerous goods may need specialist classification, packing and documentation, or may need to move by a different transport method. Tell Redcoat exactly what the product is before bringing it to us.

Send a full product description and any available technical information such as a Safety Data Sheet, UN number, quantities and packaging information.

PROCUREMENT

We buy it. We ship it.

Yes. Redcoat's procurement service can purchase suitable goods in the UK on your behalf and coordinate their onward shipment.

Yes. Where appropriate, Redcoat can coordinate purchases from multiple suppliers before consolidating suitable goods for onward transport.

Product links, part numbers, descriptions, specifications, quantities and destination information are useful. The more exact the information, the easier it is for us to source the correct product.

SPECIALIST SHIPMENTS

When it isn't just another box.

Redcoat can arrange suitable pharmaceutical and healthcare shipments subject to the product, destination and applicable regulatory requirements.

Yes. Redcoat can discuss international repatriation transport arrangements with families, funeral directors and organisations.

Yes. If your shipment is unusual, oversized, regulated or simply difficult to route, send us the details and we can assess the available options.

PAYMENTS & INSURANCE

Before the shipment leaves.

Redcoat's current terms require payment in advance for shipments unless separate account arrangements have been agreed.

What is included depends on the service selected. Your Redcoat quotation should clearly explain the freight, collection, documentation, customs and destination elements included in the price.

Redcoat does not currently provide cargo insurance directly, but can refer customers to a trusted external insurance provider who will deal with the customer directly.

TRACKING & DELIVERY

After your goods leave us.

Tracking availability depends on the carrier and service being used. Redcoat also provides shipment information and updates where available.

International transport schedules can change. Where Redcoat becomes aware of a significant operational delay, we will communicate updated information when it becomes available.

Tell us immediately. Changes to the number of packages, weights, dimensions, contents, collection address or destination can affect the booking, transport requirements and price.
